Foreword

The Canadian Electrical Installation Standards™ (CEIS™) have been adopted from the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) National Electrical Installation Standards™ (NEIS™) in the United States. These NEIS™ have been reviewed by a Canadian technical committee assembled to Canadianize the standards by referencing the requirements of Canadian Standards Association (CSA) C22.1, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CEC, Part I) and the methods used for electrical installations across Canada and to find opportunities to harmonize with the United States, where possible.

CEIS™ are intended to improve communication and consistency among designers, engineers, general contractors, specifiers, purchasers, and suppliers of electrical construction services. They define a minimum baseline of quality and workmanship for installing electrical products and systems. CEIS™ are intended to be referenced in contract documents for electrical construction projects. For this standard, the following language is recommended:

General work practices for installing armoured cable (Type AC) and metal-sheathed cable should be in accordance with CECA 120, Standard for Installing Armoured Cable (Type AC) and Metal-Sheathed Cable.

Use of CEIS™ is voluntary, and the Canadian Electrical Contractors Association (CECA) assumes no obligation to or liability for users of this publication. Availability of a CEIS™ on any given subject does not preclude any member or non-member of CECA from specifying or using alternative construction methods permitted by applicable regulations. CEIS™ should be considered best practice standards for the electrical contracting industry.

Scope

This standard covers the installation of armoured cable (Type AC) and metal-sheathed cables, which are used for electrical wiring in residential, commercial, and industrial occupancies. It also includes information on fittings and other accessories necessary for installation of these cable systems. Metal-sheathed cables include Types RA90 aluminum- and RC90 copper-sheathed cables (see CSA Standard C22.2 No. 123) and mineral-insulated (Type MI) cable. These cables consist of a seamless, smooth metal sheath or a seamed or seamless, corrugated metal sheath applied over one or more insulated conductors. In some cases, an optional non-metallic overall covering is applied over the sheath.

c) describing appropriate installation methods for Type AC and metal-sheathed cables

d) aiding installers in meeting the requirements of the CEC, Part I, for quality of work

e) creating an installation that will protect the cables from mechanical damage.

Regulatory and Other Requirements

a) All information in this publication is intended to conform to Canadian Standards Association (CSA) C22.1, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CEC, Part I) and CSA C22.2, Canadian Electrical Code, Part II (CEC, Part II). Installers should always follow the CEC, Part I, any applicable CEC, Part II standards, applicable provincial, territorial, and local codes, manufacturers’ instructions, and contract documents.a) All information in this publication is intended to conform to Canadian Standards Association (CSA) C22.1, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CEC, Part I) and CSA C22.2, Canadian Electrical Code, Part II (CEC, Part II). Installers should always follow the CEC, Part I, any applicable CEC, Part II standards, applicable provincial, territorial, and local codes, manufacturers’ instructions, and contract documents.

b) Only qualified persons familiar with commissioning building electrical systems should perform the technical work described in this publication. It is recommended that all work be performed in accordance with the edition of CSA Z462, Workplace electrical safety, in effect at the time of publication of this standard. NOTE: For definitions of “qualified person,” see Section 0 of the CEC, Part I, and Clause 3 of CSA Z462.

General requirements for installing electrical products and systems are described in CECA 1, Standard for Good Workmanship in Electrical Construction.
