Foreword

The Canadian Electrical Installation Standards™ (CEIS™) have been adopted from the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) National Electrical Installation Standards™ (NEIS™) in the United States. These NEIS™ have been reviewed by a Canadian technical committee assembled to Canadianize the standards by referencing the requirements of Canadian Standards Association (CSA) C22.1, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CEC, Part I) and the methods used for electrical installations across Canada and to find opportunities to harmonize with the United States, where possible.

CEIS™ are intended to improve communication and consistency among designers, engineers, general contractors, specifiers, purchasers, and suppliers of electrical construction services. They define a minimum baseline of quality and workmanship for installing electrical products and systems. CEIS™ are intended to be referenced in contract documents for electrical construction projects. For this standard, the following language is recommended:

General work practices for installing and maintaining high-voltage cables should be in accordance with CECA 600, Standard for Installing and Maintaining High-Voltage Cables.

Use of CEIS™ is voluntary, and the Canadian Electrical Contractors Association (CECA) assumes no obligation to or liability for users of this publication. Availability of a CEIS™ on any given subject does not preclude any member or non-member of CECA from specifying or using alternative construction methods permitted by applicable regulations. CEIS™ should be considered best practice standards for the electrical contracting industry.

Scope

Products and Applications Included
This standard describes installation procedures for shielded and non-shielded solid-dielectric high-voltage cables rated in excess of 750 V and installed in conduits and ducts or direct buried. This standard applies to single- and multi-conductor cables used for distributing power for commercial, institutional, and industrial loads in nonhazardous locations both indoors and outdoors. These cables are subject to the requirements of Section 36 of the CEC, Part I.
The standard also covers periodic routine maintenance and troubleshooting procedures for high-voltage cable and special procedures to be used after adverse operating conditions such as a short-circuit or ground fault.

Products and Applications Excluded
This standard does not apply to the following:
a) paper-insulated lead cable (PILC)
b) fluid- or gas-filled cable
c) overhead cable
d) messenger-supported cable
e) exposed cable
f) cable installed in cable trays
g) cable

General requirements for installing electrical products and systems are described in CECA 1, Standard for Good Workmanship in Electrical Construction. Other CECA Canadian Electrical Installation Standards™ (CEIS™) provide additional guidance for installing particular types of electrical products and systems.
