Foreword

The Canadian Electrical Installation Standards™ (CEIS™) have been adopted from the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) National Electrical Installation Standards™ (NEIS™) in the United States. These NEIS™ have been reviewed by a Canadian technical committee assembled to Canadianize the standards by referencing the requirements of Canadian Standards Association (CSA) C22.1, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CEC, Part I) and the methods used for electrical installations across Canada and to find opportunities to harmonize with the United States, where possible.

CEIS™ are intended to improve communication and consistency among designers, engineers, general contractors, specifiers, purchasers, and suppliers of electrical construction services. They define a minimum baseline of quality and workmanship for installing electrical products and systems. CEIS™ are intended to be referenced in contract documents for electrical construction projects. For this standard, the following language is recommended:

General work practices for installing overcurrent protection to achieve selective coordination should be in accordance with CECA 700-2015, Standard for Installing Overcurrent Protection to Achieve Selective Coordination.

Use of CEIS™ is voluntary, and the Canadian Electrical Contractors Association (CECA) assumes no obligation to or liability for users of this publication. Availability of a CEIS™ on any given subject does not preclude any member or non member of CECA from specifying or using alternative construction methods permitted by applicable regulations. CEIS™ should be considered best practice standards for the electrical contracting industry.

Scope

This standard provides an overview of procedures for installing low-voltage overcurrent protective devices to achieve selective coordination based on the available fault current within an electrical distribution system, the ratings and settings of overcurrent protective devices, and system design parameters. The purpose of this standard is to provide practical design and installation guidance that will meet the requirements of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CEC, Part I) for coordination of overcurrent protective devices.

Products and Applications Included

This standard covers the installation of low-voltage overcurrent protective devices, circuit breakers, and fuses, rated 600 V or less, for selective coordination in electrical distribution systems for residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial applications.

Products and Applications Excluded

This standard does not apply to

a) overcurrent protective devices rated more than 600 V

b) protective relays

c) protection of conductors, transformers, motors, or other electrical equipment.

Regulatory and Other Requirements

a) All information in this publication is intended to conform to Canadian Standards Association (CSA) C22.1, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CEC, Part I) and CSA C22.2, Canadian Electrical Code, Part II (CEC, Part II). Installers should always follow the CEC, Part I, any applicable CEC, Part II standards, applicable provincial, territorial, and local codes, manufacturers’ instructions, and contract documents.

b) Only qualified persons familiar with commissioning building electrical systems should perform the technical work described in this publication. It is recommended that all work be performed in accordance with the edition of CSA Z462, Workplace electrical safety, in effect at the time of publication of this standard. NOTE: For definitions of “qualified person,” see Section 0 of the CEC, Part I, and Clause 3 of CSA Z462.

c) See Annex B for imperial and metric conduit trade sizes (Table B.1) and guidance on metric conversion (Table B.2). General requirements for installing electrical products and systems are described in CECA 1, Standard for Good Workmanship in Electrical Construction. Other CECA Canadian Electrical Installation Standards™ (CEIS™) provide additional guidance for installing particular types of electrical products and systems. A complete list of CECA CEIS™ is provided in Annex C.
