Preface This document is the first edition of ASME A17.7 / CSA B44.7, Results-based Safety Code for Elevators, Elevators and Escalators. This is a fully harmonized binational code.  Scope 1.1.1 Equipment Covered by this Code This Code covers the design, construction, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance, modification and repair of the following equipment, and its accessories, rooms, spaces and ducts, provided that they are installed inside or adjacent to a building or structure: ( a) Cabin lifting and lowering mechanisms that move between two levels or more (b) Escalators and motorized bridges that carry passengers from one landing to another. This equipment includes escalators and moving walkways (see clause 1.3) (c) Cabin lifting and lowering systems that serve more than two bearings and are used exclusively for the transportation of materials because of their small size or because the cab is difficult to access. This equipment includes small goods lifts and material lifts (see Article 1.3) Note [1.1.1 b) and c): Only elevators and hoists are dealt with in this edition. Other equipment must comply with Article 1.2 (a). It will be necessary to plan to treat other materials in future editions.  1.1.2 Equipment Not Covered by this Code Equipment not covered by this Code includes, but is not limited to : ( a) temporary freight elevators covered by ANSI A10.4 and CSA Z185 (b) material lifts covered by ANSI A10.5 and CSA Z256 (c) elevating work platforms and stair lifts covered by ASME A18.1, CSA B355 and CSA B613 (d) the lifts covered by ASME A90.1 and CSA B311 e) mobile scaffolding, towers and platforms covered by ANSI A92 and CSA B354 series standards (f) motorized platforms and equipment for the interior and exterior maintenance of buildings subject to ASME A120.1 and CSA Z271 (g) conveyors and associated equipment controlled by ASME B20.1; h) cranes, derricks, hoists, clamps, jacks and slings covered by ASME B30, CSA Z150, CSA B167 and CSA Z248 (i) the industrial trucks covered by ASME B56 and CSA B335 j) portable equipment, except portable escalators (k) storage or stacking trolleys used to bring the materials to or from the storage area and move on the same floor (l) apparatus for the advancement or placement of materials on machine tools, printing presses, etc . (m) skips and blast furnace winches n) boarding ramps o) rides p) elevators for theatrical machinery or orchestra sets q) lifting bridges (r) wagon carriages or wagon dumpers s) mechanical parking garage equipment t) line cylinders, false cabins, mobile platforms and similar apparatus used to install elevators (u) lifting platforms installed on a ship or offshore drilling rig and used for loading or unloading cargo, equipment and personnel (v) leveling devices that can move a maximum of 500 mm (20 inches) w) in Canada, appliances capable of traveling over a maximum of 2,000 mm (79 in.) and used solely to carry materials or appliances 1.1.3 Effective date This edition of the Code and any addenda are effective as of the date indicated on the copyright page of this document. The CA will set the effective date of its local bylaws.
