L'essai vise à évaluer la transmission de température d'un revêtement protecteur sur de la mousse plastique lorsque l'ensemble est exposé à un feu normalisé en fonction de la courbe temps-température normalisée. Dans le Code national du bâtiment, ces revêtements protecteurs sont communément appelés barrières thermiques. Les classifications permettent d'enregistrer la performance au cours de la période d'exposition et ne déterminent pas si l'élément peut être utilisé après l'exposition au feu.
