Preface This document is the fourth edition of CSA Z271, Safety Rules for Suspended Platforms. It replaces previous editions published in 1998, 1984 and 1974. Application domain 1.1  This standard specifies requirements for the design, construction, installation, verification, testing, maintenance, modification and repair of suspended platforms.  1.2  This standard applies to suspended platforms that are  (a) designed to provide access to exterior and interior surfaces of buildings and other structures  (b) equipped with a mechanical, electrical or manual lifting device; and  (c) suspended at a single point, two points or multiple points of suspension.  1.3  This Standard does not address the requirements for safety rules for suspended platform work as set out in CAN / CSA-Z91.  1.4 This standard does not apply to the equipment listed below:  a) self-propelled and portable elevating work platforms covered by CAN / CSA-B354.1, CAN / CSA-B354.2 and CAN / CSA- B354.4 (b) work platforms moving along masts covered by CAN / CSA-B354.5 (c) CSA C225, ANSI / SIA A92.7 and ANSI / SIA A92.8 vehicle-mounted aerial vehicles (d) personnel platforms attached to or suspended from the boom of a crane referred to in CAN / CSA-Z150 e) scaffolding, covered by CAN / CSA-S269.2 and CSA Z797 f) construction lifts covered by CAN / CSA-Z185 and CAN / CSA-Z256 (g) elevators and freight elevators covered by ASME 17.1 / CSA B44 h) manholes covered by CAN / CSA-B311; and  i) lifts, covered by CSA Z98.  1.5  In CSA standards, the word "must" indicates a requirement, that is, a requirement that the user must meet to ensure compliance with the standard; "Should" indicates a recommendation or what it is advised but not required to do; and "may" indicates a possibility or what is permitted.  The notes accompanying the articles do not include prescriptions or recommendations. They serve to separate from the text explanations or information that is not properly part of the norm.  The notes at the bottom of the figures and tables are part of these and may be written as prescriptions. The annexes are qualified as normative (mandatory) or informative (optional) to specify its application.  1.6  Measurements expressed in SI (metric) units are the norm. Annex A contains equivalents in English units of these values ??for informational purposes only.
