Preface

This is the second edition of CSA SPE 17, HVAC guide for Part 9 homes. It supersedes the previous edition published in 2022.

CSA Group acknowledges that the development of this Guide was made possible, in part, by the
financial support of BC Hydro, FortisBC, BC Housing, and the City of Vancouver.

This Guide was authored by Ecolighten Energy Solutions (R. Pope, S. Chung, and R. Coleman) and reviewed by the Development Committee on HVAC Guide for Part 9 Homes.

Notes:
1) Use of the singular does not exclude the plural (and vice versa) when the sense allows.
2) Although the intended primary application of this Guide is stated in its Scope, it is important to note that it
remains the responsibility of the users of the Guide to judge its suitability for their particular purpose.
3) To submit a request for interpretation of this Guide, please send the following information to
[email protected] include “Request for interpretation” in the subject line:
a) define the problem, making reference to the specific clause, and, where appropriate, include an illustrative sketch;
b) provide an explanation of circumstances surrounding the actual field condition; and
c) where possible, phrase the request in such a way that a specific “yes” or “no” answer will address the issue.

1 Scope

This Guide highlights the benefits of best practices in proper design, sizing, installation, and
commissioning for HVAC systems with a focus on practical information for building industry
practitioners to apply knowledge from the Guide to support new construction and major renovation projects. This Guide also provides useful industry resources, supporting tools, and technical information.

This Guide may be used as a technical reference document for Part 9 new residential buildings,
incorporating illustrations, resources, and tools to assist with knowledge transfer and application. It hasalso been designed to guide collaboration between the builders, designers, tradespersons, and suppliers with respect to integration of sizing, design, installation, and performance verification.
