How to Use the Guide The guide provides explanations to help you understand Code regulations through illustrations that contain the following:

1) Diagram: a visual representation of the Electrical Code Rule.

4) Electrical Code Reference: each illustration can be referenced to the Electrical Code Rule(s) in the title box.
5) The Trillium symbol: in the left hand margin next to the rule, represents an amendment that modifies the Canadian Electrical Code rule. This amendment is applicable in Ontario.

The Ontario Electrical Code and the Requirements of the Supply Authority are legal documents setting out the regulations for electrical design and installation. The guide is organized by Section as per the structure of the Electrical Code. Only the most commonly used or commonly misunderstood Rules have been addressed. Every effort has been made to ensure that all aspects of Rules are included in the illustrations.

This NEW Fifth Edition includes the following code changes:

  • New definitions such as "ampacity", “cable tray”, “ flood elevation zone", "voltage” “ low voltage" has been increased to 1000 volts, and "wireway."
  • Service equipment not allowed to be installed below the flood elevation zone
  • Requirement for number of branch circuit overcurrent devices in dwelling unit panels has been clarified
  • New Rules have been added for the installation of bonding conductors.
  • New requirements for the installation of cables and raceways in roof decking systems harmonized with the OESC.
  • New Rules for installation of armoured cable supports.
  • New requirement for ground fault circuit interrupter protection for all 15 A and 20 A receptacles located outdoors within 2.5 m of grade.
  • Table 1-4 now has a column for each conductor square area in mm² referenced to Table D5.
  • Tables 6, 9, and 19 have been totally reorganized and revised using new simplified calculation and reading methods.
  • Table 39 has been deleted in the CEC and has been updated in the OESC.

About the Author

Marvin Rosenberg is the author of the Study Buddy Electrician Manuals, which have been used by thousands of electrical apprentices and internationally trained electricians. He is an electrician with more than 30 years of hands-on, multi-faceted experience in the electrical trade. He is also a Master Electrician and a former Master Electrician Examiner who started teaching apprentices part-time in the 1980’s. Marvin is the electrical course developer and advisor in the Centre for Continuous Learning (CCL) at George Brown College and continues to enjoy teaching Pre-Exam Courses for 309A Construction and Maintenance Electrician, 309C Domestic and Rural Electrician, and Master Electrician.
