This two-part code reference covers on-site sewage treatment systems and addresses all related subjects. Part One covers wastewater, soil, treatment process, design and construction considerations as well as maintenance and inspection of new and existing septic systems. Part Two focuses on the Ontario Building Code Requirements with explanatory notes for the objectives, functional statements and intent for each of these requirements.

This code reference will assist students and professionals to understand the concepts of the on-site sewage treatment systems and the processes by which these systems treat wastewater and disperse it into the environment. It provides information on proper design and construction consideration as well as measures needed to avoid system malfunctions and failures. Each of these elements are explained with extensive photos and diagrams that show their application in theory and practice

On-Site Sewage Systems will also assist Code users in Ontario to understand Ontario Building Code sewage system requirements. Code requirements and intent are explained so that code users will be able to achieve the objectives of the Building Code.

Ahmed Sharaf is a Building Code Advisor with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. He has over 30 years of experience in the design and construction of wastewater facilities with emphasis on sewage collection, treatment and disposal systems. In 1998, Mr. Sharaf was appointed as the On-site Sewage Systems Specialist to provide advice and interpretation of Part 8 of the Building Code (Sewage Systems). In this capacity, he was involved in the evaluation of alternative designs and products as well as in the development and maintenance of the regulation. Prior to joining the Ministry of Housing, Mr. Sharaf has worked for the Ministry of the Environment as well as several engineering firms in Canada, U.S. and overseas.
